If you are disappointed in the freeware readers, you will be - extremely -
disappointed with NewtNews (Chameleon News Reader).
Remove 3/4 of the features from WinVN or Trumpet and what you'd have is
NewtNews.

No, that will be very slow though since you will have to bring down all of the
articles in order to search them. Unless there is a command to tell the NNTP
server to perform the search on the server ... If there is such a command, I
would have thought someone would have implemented by now.
>P.S. What are the "trumpet.*" lists you mention? Mailing lists?
Trumpet mailing list. Someone may create an alt.* group for it soon though.

I was having problems with wmos20a4 with the 32 bit patch. It would work fine
at first but then I started to notice that my memory was fast dissapearing and
my hard drive was swapping like crazy. As a result I went back to the wmos20a2
version and have had no problems. I just wished they could add the printing
function on wmos20a2 like they did for version 4.

Subject: Internet VoiceChat will be available by May 7!!!
Hello all,
Some of you may have seen my recent posts regarding the program I've been
developing which allows voice communication over the net. Well, I'm happy
to report that I've been doing a lot of work on it and it should be
available in about a week or so!
Thanks to all of you who've emailed me urging to continue...it looks like it
paid off (at the expense of this semester's grades! :) The program has been
renamed from Internet Telephone to Internet VoiceChat, because I thought
that sounded better. :) The program archive will be called IVC10.ZIP when
I upload it. But don't worry, I'll post as soon as it's uploaded.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not send me requests to do beta testing. I have
received many already and will try to contact those who have previously
expressed interest in beta testing. But I have more than enough people as
it is.
Here's some advance info for those of you who are interested. You will
need, at bare minimum:
* A direct net connection (sorry, I think SLIP will be far too slow)
* Any Windows-compatible sound card (with microphone)
* Winsock 1.1 (provided by your TCP/IP software vendor)
* 386 or better (486 preferred)
NOTICE TO NOVELL LAN WORKPLACE FOR DOS USERS (I'm one of them): You must
have the most recent WINSOCK.DLL and WLIBSOCK.DLL for the program to work
properly. This gave me some headaches until I figured it out. FTP to
ftp.novell.com or ftp.upenn.edu in directory /pub/pc/novell (I think) to get
the newest drivers.
NOTICE TO GRAVIS ULTRASOUND USERS (I'm one of them): It looks like there
may be a bug in the most recent GUS Windows drivers which prevents Internet
VoiceChat from changing the sampling rate of digitized audio. IVC will
still run fine, but will be forced to sample at the default rate of
11025hz. Apparently there's nothing I can do about this.
I think I've figured out how to solve the general sampling rate problem I
was having, though.
What are some features of Internet VoiceChat?
* Ability to conduct a voice conversation over the net
* Call Screen mode
* Built-in Answering machine
* Caller ID function
* Dynamic Sampling Rate based on transfer speeds
* Fax machine metaphor (to be implemented in version 1.1)
I'm really excited about this project and judging from the email I've
received many others are too... I'm looking forward to releasing it.
Internet VoiceChat will be marketed under the shareware concept, with a
free 30 day trial period. Registration will be required after that time.
Okay, gotta go... I'll post when & where I FTP the program.
- Rich

Subject: Problem with eXcursion with Daaytona Beta
I get the same blocking calls with eXcursion as I do with the shareware MicroX
X term package. , e.g.
(From error.log file)
May 03 10:25:39> Socket warning: net_read: EWOULDBLOCK
May 03 10:25:39> Socket warning: net_accept: EWOULDBLOCK
May 03 10:25:39> Socket warning: net_read: EWOULDBLOCK
May 03 10:25:40> Socket warning: net_read: EWOULDBLOCK
May 03 10:25:40> Socket warning: net_accept: EWOULDBLOCK
May 03 10:25:40> Socket warning: net_read: EWOULDBLOCK
The effect is that I cannot run eXcursion with (say) WS_FTP or HGopher.
The problem does not arise when I use the Trumpet stack.
In the readme which comes with the Dayton beta it says that a problem with
eXcursion was fixed.
Does anyone out there know what the solution is?
John
